Experimental vocalist Kaneng Lolang recently landed on our radar via London’s independent gurus NTS Radio. Based in Burkina Faso, the former dancer and cinematographer was raised between Nigeria, Bulgaria and Russian-occupied Siberia. Her Prey Catch The Hunter LP, which arrived today, offers a unique listen in the raw. Subtly recalling the eerie intimacy of Portishead vocals, Lolang’s is a sound that consists of layered and looped vocals, sparse bass lines and gently insistent drums (c/o Laurie Anderson collaborator Shahzad Ismaily). Album standout “Palm” features spellbinding harmonies from TV On The Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe, whose high-soaring guitar riffs flicker like a candle in the dark. Catch the visuals to loop heavy “With Your Will” and stream the engrossing blend of ethereal, haunting and head nodding “devotional alternative soul” below.
