2. LULU JAMES
Lulu James will make you feel things. Maybe it’s the introspection of her lyrics ‘this song is about me’ she says on ‘Stuck’; maybe it’s the teasing restraint of ‘Be Safe’, which promises a big dubstep drop only to withhold it. Either way, her second EP is best listened to on big speakers, on repeat. She’s based in South Shields, a part of North England more readily associated with indie than what Tanzanian-born James and her producer (and former teacher) Domzilla call their ’21st Century Soul’. But they’re steady pioneering a delicious sound. We hope to hear news of an album in the works for next year.
