The ever-fascinating Sahel Sounds project — probably best known for their Music From Saharan Cellphones compilations — puts together a 7″ release for Tchin-Tabaradene (Niger) guitarist Mdou Moctar‘s swaying auto-tuned love ballad “Anar,” a huge tune on Northern African cellphone media players. On the flip side is Portland-based Brainstorm‘s glowing re-work of the song, under new title “Vanessa,” filled with anglophone lyrics and trotting guitars. Buy the Mdou Moctar / Brainstorm 7″, available now. Comment below with your name and e-mail for a chance to win a copy of the 7″!

This rules! Have you listened to Angelo Spencer et les Hautes Sommets? They have a similar Afro-reminiscent sound on one of their K Records releases.
