5. LAURA MVULA
Laura Mvula is the rare kind of newcomer who needs no introduction. What to say about her that hasn’t already been gushingly said by some blogger who has, like me, spent hours feeling overwhelmed by her brilliance? Her EP ‘She’ blends her parents’ love for jazz, her classical training and an intricate knowledge of harmony borne of her work with choirs and acapella groups. Born and raised in Birmingham she worked as a teacher and receptionist before getting signed last May. Since then it’s been up and up: she’s been in South Africa shooting her first video, and her album ‘Sing to the Moon’ will drop on 4th March 2013. Mvula’s already been nominated for the BBC Sound of 2013 and a Brit Critic’s Choice award so the inclusion of her on this list is hardly leftfield, but just in case the buzz has somehow missed you – Laura Mvula is going to be huge.
