He’s known for his club bangers, but the man behind the hits stands tall for good reason. VH1’s Behind the Music on superstar Akon reveals a surprising story of his humble beginnings in New Jersey to his genre busting work with everyone from The Fugees to Michael Jackson. Like him or not, his is a compelling story of a Senegalese artist reaching incredible heights. Check out the video above.

Thanks for this.
However, Akon is hardly the product of “humble beginnings.” He was from a middle class, his father was Mo Thiam, a bigtime Senegalese musician who had loads of success in the US too. He also met Jackson and other musicians as a child.

Does humble have to mean impoverished? And simply asking for the sake of dialogue, as we just considered his start in the Jersey music scene with the likes of the Fugees and various other musicians (who never rose to popularity) to be a humbling experience given his current status of success. For someone who had to jump the same hurdles as many other starving artists, coupled with his full circle moment with MJ, it should be a humbling experience, no?
