Photo Re-Cap: Okayplayer Holiday Jam w/ The Roots, Gary Clark Jr + more!

If you want the full play-by-play head here, this one’s for the visually inclined. Here’s a photo re-cap of last week’s Okayplayer Holiday Jam with The Roots, Gary Clark Jr., Big Daddy Kane, Shaggy, Rahzel, Angelique Kidjo, Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew, Patra, Big Freedia, Mr. Eazy, Red Fox, Rayvon, The Wurx, Ray Angry, Robert Glasper, plus DJs ?uestlove, Chief Boima, LargeUp fam Gravy, and OKP’s own Eddie “STATS.” Check out the albums above and below. All pictures by Mel D. Cole.

Flash of the Spirit: Big Freedia’s Sissy Bounce & Sierra Leone Tribal

Flash of the Spirit, a new Okayafrica series, highlights instances in which elements of traditional African culture have directly informed popular African-American art, music, and aesthetics. The series is named after the book by Robert Farris Thompson.

Check out that bounce! Dayum the folk in Big Freedia‘s “Na Who Mad” clip can shake it. It reminds us of the video for Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew‘s dance anthem “Jacky Jacky,” (below) which reminds us of the traditional Mende and Temne tribal dances that the kids in the video are referencing… which reminds us of the deep cultural ties that exist between West African and African-American culture. It kinda gives us the chills. Watch above and grab a free download of Big Freedia’s club banger “Na Who Mad”!

The Come Again: Grap N Clap Remix

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Pupa Bajah, who is sometimes described as Sierra Leone’s contemporary Bob Marley,  got his big start with this single. “Grap N Clap” tore through post-war Sierra Leone in 2004, launching Bajah, then just a teenager, into musical stardom and giving him the moniker the “fastest rapper in Sierra Leone.” Within a few short months Bajah went from a young ruffian in the streets of Freetown to a musical  superstar. The title, which translates from Sierra Leonean Krio into  ‘stand up and clap’, is a political call-to-arms to his fellow youths.

The above remix, which samples the hit “City Life” by  Dovy Dovy and A-Klazz (then known as the Baw-Waw Society), marks the start of the official Dry Eye Crew collabo. The rest is history.

Check out the original video below with a very young versions of Bajah, Dovy, and A-Klazz.

Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew: Declaration of Boldness (via Revivalist)

Today our sister channel, jazz-inspired Revivalist, goes in-depth with our favorite Sierra Leonean pop stars, Bajah + The Dry Eye Crew – excerpt below:

Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew, a ferocious trio from Sierra Leone, who’s lyrics pack a political punch–and who’s energetic performances have involved acrobatics and other physically impressive maneuvers of that caliber–have brought their message to the U.S. in a most surprising way. Growing up during the 11 year conflict, and being eye-witnesses to the mass violence that was inflicted upon their homeland, Bajah and the Dry Eye Crew members, Bajah, Dovy Dovy, and A-Klazz still have an air of love and gratitude that they exude in their everyday lives and certainly in their music, despite living in conflict for over a decade. The Revivalist spent an afternoon at Photo Rob’s studio for a fun shoot with the guys as we picked their brains about bearing witness to war, the initial culture shock of moving to the United States, and how their music has affected change in their communities where they are hometown superstars.

Check out the full interview with the dynamic trio HERE, and also see the rest of Photo Rob’s awesome flicks!
