Angélique Kidjo won a 2015 Grammy Award for Eve, an album that featured her Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) collaboration “Bomba.” The song was inspired by a Kenyan chant the Beninese singer heard while visiting a village in the Samburu reserve.

“‘Bomba’ is the name of a traditional item of African women’s clothing,” Kidjo explains , “and the song ‘Bomba’ is a tribute to African women—to their resilience and their beauty.” While the original version stood on its own, the remix by producer Maurice “Velly” Conaway pushes it over the edge into a booming and joyous anthem backed by horns and the added vocals of ZZ Ward.
