On Tuesday, according to Aljazeera, two boats that were carrying migrants capsized under the force of heavy waves, off the coast of the African country Djibouti. At the time, it was determined that 5 people had lost their lives whilst 130 others were declared missing. It is unclear where exactly the two ships were headed.

The death toll for the two ships that were carrying migrants has now risen to 28 people.

Lalini Veerassamy, the International Organization for Migration, commented saying: "Twenty-three bodies were recovered this morning and the coast guard continues (its) search."

Whilst it remains unclear where exactly the two ships were going, there is legitimate speculation that they were headed to Europe. The sinking of the two boats comes amid what has been dubbed a 'Mediterranean crisis' where Africans from countries such as Libya, Sudan or Ethiopia, all facing horrific humanitarian crises such as war and famine, attempt to flee to mainland Europe in search of refuge and better opportunities.

In recent times, Djibouti, the tiny African country located on what is known as the Horn of Africa, has become the transit point for Africans fleeing the war-torn Yemen as well as Ethiopia and Somalia.
