This Video Breaks Down How Cape Town Still Is a Segregated City

An explainer from AJ+ reminds us that the impacts of apartheid are very much present in today's South Africa.

This explainer video from AJ+ is a somber reminder that South Africa still has a long way to go to achieve true equity and justice post-apartheid.

Senior presenter Dena Takruri reports from Cape Town, exploring the impact the apartheid era still has on the Rainbow Nation, despite the system being outlawed in 1994.

"For outsiders, Cape Town can appear to be a symbol of post-apartheid South Africa," Takruri explains. "But for black South Africans, life in Cape Town is steeped in the lasting legacy of apartheid—the system of white minority rule that has left the country's black majority poor and powerless."

In the video you'll see examples of the systemic disparities seen in Cape Town neighborhoods via views from drone footage, and learn how the deliberate segregation persists today.
