This Saturday the Brooklyn Museum’s iconic exhibition “Disguise: Masks and Global African Art” is coming to a close. Join us for a day of performances, talks, workshops and more at their closing celebration entitled “ Creation as Ritual: Performing Disguise. ”

The exhibition, which has connected 25 contemporary artists with historical African masquerade, invites those who interact with it to examine how ritual plays a part in how they define their world. “By putting on a mask and becoming someone else, artists reveal hidden realities about society, including those of power, class, and gender, to suggest possibilities for the future.”

The day will feature performances by dancers Ntifafa Tete Rosenthal, Previous Gilbert, and Olivia Burgess who will bring artist Laolu Senbanjo’s spiritual body painting to life. Laolu Senbanjo, whose sacred art of the Ori was featured in Beyonce’s Lemonade, will offer his art to audience members and explain the meaning behind it. Poet Safia Elhillo will perform a multi-sensory poetry reading with soundscapes and visuals by performance collective BKLYN ZULU.
