Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi has named Judith Suminwa as the first-ever female prime minister of the Central African country. The appointment of a new prime minister had been a long overdue task, following Tshisekedi’s return into office for a second 5-year term.

Replacing Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde, the new prime minister’s experience is rooted in her veteran service career, including stints as a senior adviser at the Ministry of Budget and as program specialist and coordinator of the Peace and Democracy Consolidation Pillar at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She also served as Minister of Planning from March 2023 till her promotion.

In her role as PM, Suminwa will be tasked with pushing the president’s declared priorities of employment, youth, women and national cohesion. “I am aware of the immense responsibility bestowed upon me,” Suminwa said on national television. “We will strive for peace and national development.”

Her entrance into office is coming at a time of instability for DR Congo, with critics stating that Tshisekedi failed to tangibly improve the living conditions of citizens. The country has also been beset by the M23 rebel group, which has claimed several cities in its eastern region. The insecurity has led to the deaths of thousands of many and the displacement of over 7 million people.
