John Boyega to Star As Idris Elba’s Son in 'Pacific Rim' Sequel

John Boyega will star in the sequel to the 2013 sci-fi monster flick Pacific Rim.

John Boyega is set to star in the sequel to the 2013 sci-fi monster flick Pacific Rim, Deadline reports. What’s more? He’ll play the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first installment.

The Legendary Pictures film will begin production in the fourth quarter of 2016, with a theatrical release slated for April 7, 2017. It’s being directed by Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight based on the world created by Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham.

Del Toro, who directed the original Pacific Rim, is excited as we are about Boyega’s involvement. “I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox” said del Toro. “The Pacific Rim universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. ‘The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Boyega is equally enthused. "I'll be taking on the Pacific Rim franchise! I'm excited to be working with Legendary pictures and Steven McKnight" the Star Wars actor wrote on Instagram. "My company UpperRoom Productions founded by myself & @MrFemiOguns, will co-produce #PacificRim2 alongside @Legendary For me, this collaboration couldn't be a better way to get UpperRoom started. It brings an invigorating feeling to know that I get to participate in the telling of a remarkable story from more than one angle."

No further plot details have been revealed for the sequel.
