We remember it as a rejection of prettiness that borrowed strong, anti-establishment symbols from diverse sociopolitical movements and took youth culture by storm. Fela Kuti always called for youth and the general public to wake up and influence change in his native Nigeria. In this way, we compare the scope and magnitude of both Fela and punk to each other. Don't get us wrong, it's not the same kind of battle or the same kind of commitment — but both fought against an established, repressive establishment and flourished in the strength of their own movement.

"My first inspiration on this one came from the Fela T shirts, they have that metal/gothic design that was fun to play with. I wanted Poundo to look like the powerful independent queen that she is. I started on the idea of a long sheer black skirt for her, associated with a short faux fur jacket and outrageous pumps. Customizing her t-shirt with studs called for touches of neon and hints of animal prints to turn her into a neo-gothic amazon queen. She is seduced by a handsome hipster dandy, since Cameron inspired an elegant, sexy and laid back young Johnny Depp. Dandy with the very precious patterned velvet of the blazer-vest combo, associated with all the New York hipster codes: chains, studded Oxfords or creepers, and even John Lennon glasses."
