The Global Teacher of the Year Award sponsored by Varkey Foundation, largely considered the "Nobel Prize" of teaching, is an annual which recognizes excellence in teaching.

This year, a handful of African educators are shortlisted for the million dollar prize, including Professor Sitsophe Anku founder of the Ghana Mathematics Society, Catherine Nakabugo a math and science teacher from Uganda, and Abdikadir Ismail a teacher from Baragoi, a pastoral community in Kenya.

Two Nigerians, Todo Anthony and Ayodele Odeogbola, have also been shortlisted as well as two South Africans: Marjorie Brown and Wendy Horn.

Ertha Pond, a British athlete and physical education teacher who helped raise over $100,000 for victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, has also been nominated.
