We Are Here for the Eid Al-Adha Edition of #BlackOutEid

Firstly, Eid Mubarak!

This celebration, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the two major holidays in Islam. Eid Al-Adha corresponds with the Hajj—the pilgrimage to Mecca.

This feast commemorates when God appeared to Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) in a dream and asked him to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience. As Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, God stopped him and gave him a sheep to kill in place of his son.

Many Muslim families sacrifice an animal and share the meat with the poor during Eid Al-Adha. They also donate to charities that benefit the poor and routinely exchange presents during the holiday.

Secondly, we are so here for the slayage that’s been #BlackOutEid for this holiday.

The hashtag initially came last year from Twitter user @krennylavitz, who wanted to check out how other black Muslims celebrate Eid. It then resurfaced this year in July, due to black Muslims calling out and bringing attention to the lack of brown folk on Snapchat’s Eid Al-Fitr story by showing how diverse the Muslim community truly is.
