'Pacific Rim Uprising' is the Latest Film With a Black Lead to Top the Box Office

The sci-fi sequel starring John Boyega earned $28 million its opening weekend.

'Black Panther' has been sitting pretty at the top of the box office for six weeks now, and while it's run is still going strong—the film is officially the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time in the US—however, another action-packed film starring a black lead has now taken the number one spot.

Pacific Rim Uprising, starring John Boyega led the box office this weekend, earning $28 million with Black Panther still raking in an impressive $17 million over the weekend, reports CNN.

The film's success means that the movies in the top two spots at the box office both feature black leads—we're rubbing that in the face of any Hollywood exec who's ever doubted the commercial potential of films with black people in starring roles.
