South Africa's Tony Gum won the 2017 Miami Beach PULSE PRIZE for her debut solo exhibition, Ode to She, artnet News reports reports. The 22-year-old artist walks away with a prize of $2,500 (approximately R34, 000).

Gum beat 15 other nominees for the prize. The judging panel included experts in the art world, such as Tommy Ralph Pace, associate director of ICA Miami, who was quoted by artnet News saying, "Pulse Art Fair's commitment to presenting solo artist projects provides critical exposure for young and under-recognized artists."

Gum took to social media to thank God and her supporters for the win.

"Praises to the most High Ndiyabulela kuluNtu lonke (my people) you are constant inspiration; all this wouldn't be possible without you. Much love to Pulse Art Fair and all the incredible folks I've encountered throughout Miami Art Basel week. Please give me a sec to let this sink in," read part of her post.

Ode to She opened in September at Christopher Moller Gallery in Cape Town. It featured a series of self-portraits, like most of her work. It showed the artist dressed in traditional Xhosa attire while holding modern props.

It depicted the journey to womanhood through her heritage.
