Watch the Trailer for the Chinonye Chukwu-Directed Drama ‘Clemency,’ Starring Alfre Woodard

The Nigerian filmmaker's Sundance-winning film, about an emotionally conflicted prison warden, is gaining serious Oscar buzz.

The first trailer for the critically-acclaimed psychological drama Clemency, starring Alfre Woodard has arrived.

The film, directed and written by Nigerian filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu, won the Sundance Grand Jury prize back in January, making Chukwu the first Black woman director to earn the top prize at the festival. The film also recently showed at the Toronto Film Festival.

Here's the film's synopsis:

Years of carrying out death row executions have taken a toll on prison warden Bernadine Williams (Alfre Woodard). As she prepares to execute another inmate, Bernadine must confront the psychological and emotional demons her job creates, ultimately connecting her to the man she is sanctioned to kill.

Veteran actor Woodard, is receiving serious Oscar buzz for her performance as Bernadine, along with Aldis Hodge, who plays the death row inmate.

The film also stars Wendell Pierce, Danielle Brooks, Richard Schiff and LaMonica Garrett. Chukwu Is currently directing the film A Taste of Power, a drama based on former Black Panther leader Elaine Brown's life.

Clemency will be released in theaters on December 27. Watch the trailer below.
