More than a year and a half since Pro (fka Prokid)'s untimely demise, a new verse from the South African hip-hop legend appears on a song from respected lyricist Captain's recently-released debut album The Ape Tape.

Pro appears on the song "Meloding." The beat was just yearning for a vicious verse from the Soweto-born lyricist who died in 2018. The instrumental is grimy and is reminiscent of the kind of production Pro favored. The verse reveals Pro in his element from his lively delivery to a showcase of his personality and his wide vocabulary.

Captain was signed to Money First Entertainment (MFU), an imprint that was founded by Pro. The Ape Tape is his first full length solo release after being part of the group The Assembly and the collective School of Hip-Hop for many years. Captain has cemented his spot as one of the country's most gifted lyricists as part of the aforementioned entities and in his countless guest verses.

The first lines Captain raps on The Ape Tape on the song "Free State of Rhyme" are a homage to Pro—he repurposes the line "S'qala ngok'bong' isupport bese siy'giva back," a line from Pro's 2012 hit single "Sekele."

Captain spoke about Pro's involvement in the project during a listening session held in Pretoria a week ago:

"I feel like it's important for me to piece together this body of work because I have sat on 50% of it for a very very long time, and most of it was curated by Linda (Pro) himself. Also, for the mere fact that people know Cap, but they don't know Mpho, and I felt like it was imperative that I take that next step in developing my relationship with people who follow my music. I have a lot of people who feel very strongly about my stuff."
