Nigerians on Twitter React to President Buhari Running For Re-election

The 74 year-old leader will run for re-election in 2019 and many Nigerians are simply over it.

Despite widespread speculation about the state of his health and his plans to run for re-election, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria has announced that he will run for second term in office next year.

The announcement was made via the Presidency of Nigeria's Twitter page. "President @MBuhari has just announced his intention to seek the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and contest for a second term of Office in the 2019 elections." read the tweet.

Nigerians online have had mixed reactions to the news, but it seems like most are not in favor of him running for another term. Many believe the 74-year-old president should make room for a younger, more progressive leader, calling out his notably slow-moving leadership. After all, a good leader should also know when it's time to step down.

Many are shocked about the decision given ongoing concerns about his health. Others are simply not having it, and are using humor to address the issue—sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying.

Buhari is currently in the UK to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting with Theresa May Theresa May on April 16. The president left for the country a week early, leading many to believe that he was there seeking medical treatment ahead of the meeting. The president spent three months in the UK last year on an extended "medical leave."
