Issa Rae knows how to turn her awkwardness into an asset.

It’s sounding like HBO has high hopes for Awkward Black Girl franchise creator’s upcoming eight-episode-long laugh fest Insecure, premiering on the premium cable network Oct. 9.

Rae has secured a two-year production deal with HBO that entails developing new programming for all its platforms, including HBO Go and HBO Now, highlighting diverse narratives, according to Shadow & Act.

Comedy series Insecure, co-created with former host of The Nightly Show Larry Wilmore, follows girl friends, Issa Dee and Molly—played by Rae and creator of Nigerian-American sitcom pilot First Gen Yvonne Orji—as they navigate the ups and downs of their professional and personal lives.

You can count on Rae, whose father is Senegalese, and Orji, whose family hails from Nigeria, to weave in the awkwardness of their experiences as first-gen kids into the dramedy.
