Finnish/Ethiopian bare-boned folk singer Mirel Wagner initially carved her mark on our site with the gloomy “No Death” and its accompanying music video, the centerpiece of sorts from her standout 2012 debut LP. When The Cellar Children See the Light Of Day, Wagner's follow-up to that album, continues the singer's haunting explorations of death and love through a refined lens and increasingly rugged guitar progressions.

The record's a furthering of the outlook she described in an interview with us before the release of her debut LP, "what I really like to do in music, and what I listen to, has that sort of simplicity that creates a huge emotional response. I like simple things, you don’t always need to shout to make an impact." That mission remains, as do the influences of Leonard Cohen, Edgar Allan Poe, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, among others (NPR compares her compositions to the writing of Flannery O'Connor).
