Watch Stormzy Deliver a Cover of ‘Brown Skin Girl’

The rapper took to BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge to treat us to his take on Beyoncé's The Lion King: The Gift hit.

The Gift just keeps on giving. On his recent visit to BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, UK rapper Stormzy treated the audience to a cover of Beyoncé, Wizkid,Saint Jhn, and Blue Ivy's "Brown Skin Girl" from her recent album The Lion King: The Gift.

The song opens with Stormzy singing the chorus over a sole piano before a full band–complete with brass section–joins in while he raps an added verse to the track.

Stormzy kept up with the theme of the song with lyrics that nod to characters in The Lion King as well as words of affirmation and love to brown skin girls. He even pays homage to Beyoncé's own family with the closing line: "Young Jigga looking forward to my Blue/ Stay True."

Young Simba and his lioness
Young Simba got his mind fresh
This is for my unborn daughter
Man I'll never let you down.
On your head you wear a crown.

Stormzy is joined by rising singer Stalk Ashley who delivers a solid cover of the original over the energetic live band and harmonized backup vocals. Their rendition honors the intent of the original album. As Disney stated, it was a "love letter to Africa [that] highlights the setting of the film, rooted in African culture and wondrous narratives." Stormzy checks all those boxes, celebrates Queen Bey and still makes the track undeniably his.
