Afro-Brazil 2014: The Digital Roots Music of Kafundó Vol. 1

Afro Brazil 2014: Kafundó Records and Dutty Artz team up to release the first installment of their digital roots compilation Kafundó Vol. .

As we gear up for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil 2014, we’ll be taking moments to highlight some select Brazilian tracks that come across our desks. From capoeira music (an accompaniment to the sport) and maracatu to samba and the favela-bred baile funk, the influence of African cultures & sounds on the South American nation’s own arts is immeasurable. In our series Afro-Brazil 2014we’ll be digging into a few of these ‘ritmos e batidas’ from Brazil.

Just in time for all your World Cup viewing parties, Kafundó Records and Dutty Artzhave linked up to present a thumping compilation of "digital roots music from Brazil" titled Kafundó Vol. 1Assembled under the careful curation of tropical bassheads Maga BoandWolfram Lange, Kafundó Vol. 1 features an eclectic roster of  artists, producers and DJs whose soundscapes reflect the cross cultural nature of contemporary Brazilian music.

As Dutty Artz explains "Cafundó means a far away and isolated place in Brazilian Portuguese." As the inaugural release from the newly minted Kafundó Records, this compilation seeks to explore and draw inspiration from alternative spaces within Afro-Brazilian music traditions in addition to those of the greater African diaspora. Standouts on the 16-track record include the catchy fusion of baile, brega and arrocha on Som Peba’s “Arrozx” and the spastic trap-influenced 808’s throughout 'Kizoombow' by Tropkillaz. Stream the compilation below and purchase on iTunes, Bandcamp and Juno.
