Over the weekend Spoek Mathambo came through with a surprise new chapter in his mixtape trilogy. It was just about a month ago that Spoek began rolling out his definitive guide to "future" music in SA, first with an all-rap all-South African 52-minute tape. Next up came a hand-picked selection of electronica/beats/house bliss on the 70-minute Future Sounds Of Mzansi. Pt. 2 of the Mzansi tapes plays like the hybridized flipside of the first, an hourlong exploration of how electronic music has seeped its way into a spectrum of genres in South Africa. Subheaded "Afro Rock Soul Funk Folk Electronica For Turbulent Times," Spoek's latest selection includes cuts from his Fantasma foursome, Nakhane Toure, Petite Noir, Umlilo, Hlasko, The Brother Moves On, Fantasma bassist Vukazithathe, Samthing Soweto, DJ Spoko, Beatenberg and more.
