Here’s Everything You Need to Know About AKA and Reebok’s Upcoming Sneaker Collaboration

Only 600 pairs of The SneAKA will be available for sale.

At the beginning of the month, AKA shared with his millions of social media followers that he was releasing a sneaker with Reebok. The shoe, promoted under the hashtag "TheSneAKA," is coming on the 26th of October, and will be sold on the Reebok South Africa website and the brand's stores across the country.

Recently, Hype reported that only 600 pairs of the shoe will be available for sale. Each box will be individually numbered and personally signed by Supa Mega himself.

To promote the collaboration, an ongoing six-part series is running on the Reebok South Africa YouTube channel. The series is currently on its second episode. On the first episode, AKA and Reebok's brand director PJ Morilly give background to the collaboration.

"The first time I met Kiernan back in 2015, in Sandton, was really for us to get to know each other, get a feel for the potential of a possible partnership," says Morilly. "And in that meeting, he already spoke about a sneaker collab. And I was kinda like, 'pump the breaks bud, we just here to work a deal.'"

AKA adds: "For me, coming up with a sneaker is like coming up with music. You take what you have inside you and you put it inside the sneaker. But I know when we done with this, it will be amazing. And people will remember this as a moment in time where AKA and Reebok dropped a sneaker."

The second episode of the series focuses on the history of the Reebok Classic Leather sneaker, which AKA has been rocking since he became the face of Reebok Africa in 2017. Last year, the rapper released the song and video "Practice" in partnership with Reebok.

AKA's not new to collaborating with fashion brands—the Supa Mega merchandise in 2016 was a collaboration with the South African label Head Honcho, and the result was what should be listed among the best merchandise by a South African hip-hop artist.

The group Skwatta Kamp were the first hip-hop artists in South Africa to have their own sneaker line when they collaboration with KappaSKWEAR was released in 2007. In the same year, the later rapper Pro(Kid) released a sneaker and clothing line with the South African label Loxion Kulća. The crew BoyznBucks also released a customized Old School Vans sneaker in 2018.

Reebok collaborated with kwaito star Kabelo in 2005 for the Bouga Luv sneaker. Hopefully, more hip-hop artists in South Africa and other brands hop on the trend.
