Africa Day Celebrations: Concerts Where You Can Turn Up

From the virtual to the socially-distanced physical, here are three major concerts taking place this Africa Day which feature a host of musical talent.

It's the 58th anniversary of Africa Day! While the world has changed vastly over the past year, as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the celebrations continue. An annual honouring and spotlighting of African history, heritage and talent, this year's theme is "Arts, Culture And Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want." If you're looking for a few events to tune into today where you can just turn up, here are three major concerts which feature a plethora of African talent including Davido, Yemi Alade, Azawi, Blxckie, Cleo Ice Queen and more.

Africa Day Concert

The second edition of this annual concert will be hosted once again by actor and producer, Idris Elba. A host of African talent from Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria, Egypt, Uganda and several other countries is set to hit the stage tonight. From young talents like Elaine, Blxckie, Focalistic and Teni to music heavyweights including Angélique Kidjo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Fally Ipupa. The event will be live-streamed online on YouTube at 7 P.M. CAT and broadcast across the continent on MTV Base at 9 P.M. CAT.

Hometown Heroes Nigeria

This year's Hometown Heroes concert series will spotlight Nigerian talent. Established in 2019, the event aims to showcase both upcoming and veteran musical talent from across the globe. Beginning today and ending on May 27, the three-day series will include the likes of Davido, Omah Lay, Yemi Alade, Patoranking, Buju, Tems and more. The concert will be streamed online on Audiomack's official YouTube page.

Africa Day Celebration 2021

The only physical event on this list, the Africa Day Celebration is being held at Constitution Hill, Johannesburg. The popular venue has been the site for numerous events in the past including the ever-popular Afropunk. Hosted by The Locrate Market, the event will include a variety of music performances and an exploration of different cuisines, fashion and even business talks. Artists set to perform include Shwi Nomtekhala, Ntate Stunna, The Brother Moves On, Black Jar Moscow and several others. Tickets can still be purchased here.
