African Footballers Pay Tribute to Burkina Faso Goalkeeper Soulama Abdoulaye

The goalie, who had 45 appearances for Burkina Faso's national team, is mourned on social media after he passed away from a long illness.

The football world has been mourning the loss of Burkinabe goalie Soulama Abdoulaye, who died in a hospital in Bobo-Dioulasson on October 27 after suffering from a long illness. He was 37-years-old.

Soulama earned 42 caps for the Burkina Faso national team, Les Etalons (The Stallions), and was part of the team that finished in 2nd place at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

He'd recently been playing for Ghanaian Premier League teams Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, with both clubs offering their condolences on Twitter. Soulama had previously played internationally in the Algerian and Turkish leagues.

Burkina Faso's big footballing names and other African stars have also been mourning the passing of Soulama, as seen quoted in the BBC.

"You were the best goalkeeper in Burkina," said Burkina Faso international Mohammed Koffi. "You were a big brother and a team-mate...RIP Abdoulaye Soulama."

Ghanaian national team goalie, Razak Brimah, said "It's sad news. Africa has lost a great goalkeeper. Allah knows. Rest in peace Soulama."

Former Ghana defender Anthony Baffoe called Soulama a "great guy with leadership qualities. "What sad news, he was a leader, very outspoken. He was a talented goalkeeper and our condolences to his family."

Interview: Joeboy Wants to Take on the World

The Afrobeats star talks global dominance, future plans, and his new album, Body & Soul.

Joeboy’s ascent has been meteoric.

Since his 2019 breakout single, "Baby,” the Nigerian musician has amassed a year-by-year plethora of continental hit singles that have cemented him as Afrobeats’ sweetheart and a true African popstar.

Releasing an EP and an album along the way, Joeboy’s often romantically-themed music, which usually seeks to serenade, has gradually morphed into more varied forms of love—he is love-starved in “Alcohol,” correctional in “Contour,” thirsty in “Duffel-bag,” and affectionate in “Body & Soul.” Those four singles preface his much-anticipated sophomore album, Body & Soul.

“This album definitely has more edge, it is less innocent than the first one,” Joeboy tells OkayAfrica about his new album, which is titled after one of his earlier singles.

With well over a billion streams, Joeboy swiftly became a vanguard of the new class of Afrobeats superstars, but with his latest effort, the Lagos-bred artist seeks to stamp his African popstar claim on the world stage.

Adekunle Gold Releases the Glitzy ‘Tio Tequila’ EP

The Afropop Maestro has dropped a three-track project titled Tio Tequila ahead of his studio album release.

Acclaimed Nigerian crooner, Adekunle Gold has unveiled his latest project Tio Tequila, a three-song bundle that kicks off a summer brimming with exciting activities, and teases his upcoming album. The EP features the recent chart-topping single with fellow Lagosian Zinoleesky, "Party No Dey Stop," alongside previously-unheard tracks, "Do You Mind,” a sultry summer anthem and "Omo Eko," a tribute to his hometown of Lagos. The infectious mix of sounds and styles is a homage to Adekunle Gold's innovative musical prowess.

Historically, Gold has had an incredible talent for creating music that blends seemingly disparate genres. His latest collection of three songs, produced by the renowned Kel-P, is a testament to his ability to merge Afropop, Afrobeats, R&B, and amapiano to deliver a trifecta of exhilarating tracks that align with his signature sound, but leave room for his growth as an artist. Tio Tequila is somewhat of a teaser that will precede the singer’s Def Jam debut, which is slated for release in July.

In a conversation with The FADER, Adekunle shared his thoughts on the project and confirmed that the three-track output is a taste of his upcoming album in July.

Tio Tequila is a metaphor for where I’m at in life right now,” Gold told The FADER. “I’m happy and I just want to celebrate my wins and we should all feel the same. The three songs are a taster for what’s to come on my next album; they’re uplifting and will get you in the mood to party.”

We are definitely in the mood to party, and will keep an eye out for July’s release.
