Veteran Kenyan Rapper Chris Kantai Has Died

Tributes have been pouring out for the celebrated rapper all morning.

Pioneering Kenyan raper, Chris Kantai, also known as Kantadda, a leading force in the Kenyan hip hop scene has died. He was 42.

The artist was admitted to the hospital on Monday, after he fell ill, reports Nairobi News. He passed on Wednesday due to complications with breathing, the publication adds.

Kantai rose to fame in the early 2000s with songs like "Huu ni Nani G" (Swahili for Who is this G), and the popular track "Happy" featuring fellow Kenyan rap star Stella Mwangi.


The artist made a comeback three years ago with the record "Ting Badi Malo" (Luo for Raise your Hands Up), which featured Kenyan artist Khaligraph Jones.

Before releasing these records, Kantai built his name as a formidable battle rapper. He earned several Chaguo La Teeniez awards for his work, the equivalent to Teen Choice Awards in Kenya.

Tributes have been pouring in for the late artist since the news broke. He is being remembered for his unique contribution to the Kenyan rap scene.

South African rapper Boity has finally shared the visuals for her latest single "018's Finest" featuring Maglera Doe Boy and Ginger Trill. The single comes off Boity's EP 4463, which dropped last December. Marked as a fan favourite "018's Finest" borrows from Boity's hometown dialing code. The 31-year-old rapper hails from Potchefstroom, affectionately known as Potch, a quaint town in South Africa's North West province. The music video highlights the lesser known aspects of hip-hop culture in the otherwise sleepy town.
