Chimurenga Renaissance & Chief Boima's 'Kudada Nekuva Munhu Mutema' Mixtape

Stream Chimurenga Renaissance's new mixtape "Kudada Nekuva Munhu Mutema," which features live mbira playing and mixing by Chief Boima.

Chimurenga Renaissance, the project from Shabazz Palaces' Tendai Maraire and Hussein Kalonji, shared their latest Kudada Nekuva Munhu Mutema mix this week. Similar to the group's riZe vadZimu riZe LP, Kudada Nekuva Munhu Mutema combines a number of  eclectic sounds, spanning from traditional Zimbabwean instrumentals to British psychedelic funk and hip-hop beats. The mix runs through tracks from Zimbabwean duo Zimbabwe Legit, reggae/dancehall staple Junior Reid, and R&B newcomer Tinashe, as well as chanted Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army war songs. It also features Jacob Mafuleni and Tonderai Ndava of Mbira dzeMuninga as guests for some masterful mbira playing and several new Chimurenga songs from their forthcoming album Proud To Be African EP, including the title track and “Crazy.” Chief Boima was brought on to cohesively mix and bridge the hip-hop and Zimbabwean instrumentals together. Stream Chimurenga Renaissance’s Kudada Nekuva Munhu Mutema below and, for more, check out our Okayafrica TV interview with Tendai Maraire.

Interview: Focalistic’s Blend of Hip-Hop and Amapiano Is Working

South African rapper Focalistic doesn't fixate on genre. He wants you to know his music "is for South Africans, by South Africans that sound South African."

A few weeks before Focalistic's hit single "Ke Star" is announced to have gone gold (it has since gone platinum), a large group of school kids gather around the driver seat of the rapper's sporty BMW. "I realised that people really love him during the shoot of the 'Ke Star' music video," a passer-by says. "It was wild."

Just like today. The same group, which has now grown bigger, waits outside the spot where Focalistic will sit down for an interview. They each want a picture with one of the country's most promising rappers. They have to wait until he's done answering our questions. Asked if he enjoys being mobbed by fans, he says, "It's not like I like it. But it's something you get used to and you understand it. It's love, it's never to irritate."
