Doc Shebeleza Remembered as a Kwaito Pioneer

Acclaimed South African kwaito artist Doc Shebeleza, born Victor Bogopane, has died at 51 after a lengthy illness.

Just days before his death, he spoke to News24 about discovering jaundice linked to pancreatic issues. "My family, friends and fans have been extremely supportive," he shared in one of his final interviews.

Doc Shebeleza then released “Ebumnandini” in 2000. With its sub-bass-heavy instrumentation, the offering reflected the shift in popular music. People were moving towards the mid-tempo sound popularised by DJs such as Glen Lewis, and Doc Shebeleza followed suit.

Ebumnandini also featured Ama'Skumfete, a group he founded and modeled after the likes of M'du Masilela's Mashamplani. His sixth offering, “Ingangara,” solidified his standing as a bonafide hitmaker and ladies' man.

In 2014, rapper Cassper Nyovest honored Shebeleza's legacy with a tribute song that remains in his performance sets today.

On the news of his death, the social media network X saw a wave of support from users. Rapper L-Tido shared a touching tribute: "RIP Doc Shebeleza, he was a real Grootman. In 2014, I sampled ‘Ghets Ghetsa’ for my song ‘Steve Kekana.’ He cleared the sample for me without taking a percentage or charging me. That's unheard of in the music industry! Condolences to his family."

"A true legend whose unique style of delivery as an artist cannot be mimicked. Your love for your community is evidenced through your charitable deeds. Doc Shebeleza, you leave behind an indelible mark. May your soul rest in peace. May your family and friends be comforted in this time of need," tweeted the South African Music Awards account.

Born in Naledi, Soweto, in 1973, Doc Shebeleza helped define an unforgettable era of South African music. He is survived by nine children — six sons and three daughters.
