Egyptian footballer, Mohamed Salah has been named African Footballer of the Year by BBC Sports.

The Liverpool forward earned the title after gaining the most votes in a fan poll, beating out Victor Moses of Nigeria, Gabon's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Guinean footballer Naby Keita, and Senegal's Sadio Mane.

He is the third Egyptian player to be named African Footballer of the Year, and the first since 2008, when Mohamed Aboutrika took the title.

"I am very happy to win this award," the 25-year-old told BBC Sports. "It's always a special feeling when you win something. I feel like I had a great year, so I'm very happy."

His win comes after the star player helped Egypt qualify for for the World Cup for the first time since 1990.

"I want to be the best Egyptian ever so I work hard," said the player of his standout performance.
