As we reported a few months ago Awesome Tapes From Africa, the site that unearths and digitizes obscure cassettes from all over the continent, set up its own record label. The project aims to promote these sublime finds and give the original artists 50% of all profits collected from sales (trust, that's way better than the usual artist cut on any label).
For its first release, ATFA is printing Malian singer Nâ Hawa Doumbia's La Grande Cantatrice Malienne Vol 3, recorded in the Ivory Coast in 1982. In "Kungo Sogoni," streaming below, Doumbia's commanding vocals float firmly above entwined acoustic guitars and percussion.
