Future Sound Of Mzansi is shaping up to be one of the documentaries we're most excited for this year. A film by Nthato Mokgata (aka Spoek Mathambo) and filmmaker Lebogang Rasethaba, the project is an in depth look at South Africa's electronic music landscape through its key players, and features a roll call of our favorite South African producers (and a few rappers too), including DJ Spoko, DJ Mujava, Nozinja, Okmalumkoolkat, Zaki Ibrahim, John Wizards, Jumping Back Slash, Richard The Third (aka Maramza), Black Coffee, Culoe De Song, Christian Tiger School, and BIG FKN GUN.
With the film set to make its South African debut in July at the Durban International Film Festival, Spoek has a new mixtape series up his sleeves. After a slew of top notch all-SA electronic, rap, and electronic-hybrid tapes earlier this year, Spoek now looks to individual beatmakers and shakers featured in the doc. Today he came through with an hourlong dose of classics, rare material and soon-to-be released tracks from Jozi's BOYZNBUCKS rapper Okmalumkoolkat, fresh on the heels of signing a label deal with Vienna's Affine Records. Perhaps Spoek puts it best: "He is a visionary vocalist/visual artist who's work is an exciting example of the sounds coming out of SA right now. He has collaborated with producers from all over SA as well as far afield as Austria and the UK, to create a unique mixture of futuristic, distinctly South African tracks." Look out for Okmalumkoolkat's solo EP debut Holy Oxygen I to drop in July and stream/download Spoek's latest in the Future Sound of Mzansi Mix Series below.
