DR Congo's Ebola Death Toll Tops 2,300, Now the Country's Deadliest Outbreak
The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has become the deadliest in the country's history, with 4,945 cases and 2,325 deaths recorded as of today, Monday, August 17, surpassing the toll from the 2018-2020 outbreak. It's also the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak ever recorded, and the World Health Organization says it's on track to overtake the 2014-16 West Africa outbreak, the deadliest on record with over 11,000 deaths. In Mongbwalu, a gold-mining town in Ituri province, a severe water shortage is making things worse — only one in five of the town's 140,000 residents has reliable access to safe water, leaving many unable to wash their hands regularly, a key defense against the virus.
Cameroon Wins First-Ever WAFCON Title, Beats Malawi 3-0 in Final
Cameroon claimed its first-ever Women's Africa Cup of Nations title with a commanding 3-0 win over tournament debutants Malawi in Rabat, with Marie Ngah Manga scoring twice and Naomi Eto adding one to complete a dominant first-half performance. Cameroon's defense kept star sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga quiet throughout, denying Malawi — the tournament's lowest-ranked side at 153rd in the world — a fairytale finish to their unexpected WAFCON run. Both teams will compete at the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil alongside fellow semifinalists Algeria and Morocco.
Hichilema Widens Lead in Zambia Vote as Opposition Alleges Fraud, Cites Arrests
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema's lead in the presidential election widened to roughly 62% of valid votes today, Monday, August 17, with about 71% of constituencies reporting, while rival Brian Mundubile trailed at 36%. The vote count came amid growing turmoil after police arrested 11 people, including leading opposition figures, on election night, accusing them of possessing military-grade weapons for an "armed insurrection" — a raid Mundubile said targeted his own residence and life. Mundubile is now alleging possible tampering with results forms and has called for an independent investigation, though a presidential spokesperson dismissed the claims as lies.
